ESTATES AND PROTECTED INDIVIDUALS CODE

This page provides several articles about the Estates and Protected Individuals Code (EPIC) as enacted and effective in Michigan April 1, 2000. It applies to all estates of individuals who die after March 31, 2000. It also applies to the administration of decedent estates being administered after that date and to all guardianships, conservatorships, and trusts being administered as of April 1, 2000.

The Estates and Protected Individuals Code can be found at the Michigan Legislature site by clicking on the button EPIC STATUTES. Forms for conducting various proceedings under this code can be found by clicking on the PROBATE FORMS button.
Court rules for proceedings under the new code are being refined and reviewed by the Michigan Supreme Court. Until final adoption of rules by the Supreme Court, interim rules that have been authorized by the Michigan Supreme Court for use in all the probate courts of Michigan can be found at the button PROBATE COURT RULES.

Probate Judge Philip Harter of Calhoun County, Michigan has developed an extensive web page for various probate proceedings and general information. There is a section entitled Notes that provides general information on various aspects of the code and gives some specific detail on how to commence an estate administration. The site also has a large number of indexed questions and answers regarding various issues and interpretations of the new code. These items are not duplicated on this site. You may go directly to the Calhoun county site by clicking the EPIC QUESTIONS button.

Following is an Index of Articles that address common provisions of the Estates and Protected Individuals Code with a short explanation of the subject of the article. Some articles have direct links to the statute pertaining to the article.
