Frequently Asked Questions

Q. How Do I Request a Police Report ?

A: To request a copy of an Accident report – see; Traffic Reports

To request a police report (other than a traffic crash UD10) a person would need to know one of the following: date, location, names (first and last) of one of the individuals involved. It would also be helpful to know what type of report we’re looking for (i.e.: larceny, B&E, assault, etc.).

The incident must be a “closed report”….either there is no suspect or the perpetrator has been sentenced and the time has elapsed for an appeal. We charge $5.00 for a report plus .25 per additional page. If reprinting of photographs is requested, there is a $1.00 per print reproduction fee. A report does not become ”public record” until all litigation has been completed.

Requests can be made in person at the Ionia County Sheriff’s Office, or by mail with prior payment.

Q:  How do I apply for a Concealed Weapons Permit?

A:  For persons wishing to obtain a (LTP) Application And License to Purchase a handgun, this is what you may expect:

You may make the application and/or receive a safety inspection during regular business hours Monday-Friday 9:00am -4:00pm. There is no fee for either service.

1. You will need valid picture ID i.e.; Operator's
License, Military ID, or Michigan Personal
    Identification.

2. You need proof of residency in this county. ( An
address change label from the Secretary of
State's Office on your driver's license or
    personal ID, or voter registration)

3. You will fill out a short application form.

4. You are required to pass, by a 70% score, the
Basic Pistol Safety Questionnaire. A State Of
Michigan Basic Pistol Safety Pamphlet is
    provided for your reference.

5. A check will be made on your criminal history
background to ensure there is nothing on your
record that prohibits you from obtaining this
    license.

6. The LTP is only valid for 10 calendar days, so you
will want to have a selection in mind.

7. You have 10 calendar days from the date of
purchase/acquisition to return to the Sheriff's
Department for a Safety Inspection and
    Certificate.

8. Unused LTP's MUST be returned either in person
    or by mail.

9. It takes approximately 30 minutes for this
procedure and barring any unforeseen problems,
you should have the LTP in hand when you
    leave.

For Persons bringing in a handgun for a safety inspection certificate, this is what you can expect:

1. Gun may be transported to the Sheriff's Office in the trunk of your vehicle, unloaded, and encased in some manner. You should not bring ammunition. If your vehicle does not have a trunk, the gun must be in a locked container not readily accessible to the occupants.

2. You will present your completed LTP or, if you hold a valid Carry Concealed Permit, the completed Pistol Sales Record and your CCP, along with the Handgun, for inspection. (Extra blank Pistol Sales Records may be obtained from this office, also.)

3. A cursory inspection, ie; manufacturer, caliber, serial number, barrel length, and model are verified.

4. A Safety Inspection Certificate is issued. This procedure should take 15-20 minutes, but additional time may be needed if the office is experiencing a busy day.
