SMOKE-FREE IONIA

      Smoke Free Ionia is a community coalition, through the Ionia County Health Department and the Ionia County Substance Abuse Workgroup, that works to assist the citizens of Ionia County in becoming more aware of the effects that tobacco use and secondhand smoke have on our community.

Mission Statement

The citizens of Ionia County will be protected from the health hazards of secondhand smoke.

Did you know?

  • Heart disease, cancer, stroke and chronic lower respiratory diseases are the four leading causes of death in Ionia County and smoking is linked to all these diseases!
  • A cigarette contains over 4,000 chemicals...more than 50 which are know carcinogens (cancer-causing agents)!
  • Smoking during pregnancy causes the risk of complications, premature delivery, low birth weight,stillbirth, and sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS).
  • 22% of pregnant women in Ionia County smoke!
  • Tobacco use is the leading cause of PREVENTABLE death in the United States!
  • Secondhand smoke causes 3,000 lung cancer deaths and over 35,000 coronary heart disease deaths each year among NON-SMOKERS!
  • In Michigan and Ionia County, smoking kills more people each year than alcohol, AIDS, car crashes, illegal drugs, murders, and suicide COMBINED!
