The recycling program is sponsored by the Michigan Groundwater Stewardship Program in cooperation with pesticide dealers across the state. The containers must be empty and clean to be acceptable for recycling. Farmers are encouraged to pressure rinse or triple rinse containers, as soon as they are emptied. Add the rinse water to the spray mix. Containers having residues that can be rubbed off with a gloved hand will be considered unacceptable for recycling and will be rejected. Applicators are encouraged to inspect all containers immediately after rinsing, to be sure that all of the product has been rinsed out. Check the outside of the container-particularly the pour spout-the spout threads and the container wall surrounding the spout to be sure they are free of product residues. Stains that don't flake or rub off are acceptable for recycling. Also, remove as much foil as possible from around spout, remove all plastic wrappers and packets, and remove as much paper as possible. Some residual paper is acceptable for recycling. For more information on the container-recycling program, contact Elizabeth Robins, Groundwater Technician at (616) 527-8219; or contact one of the participating dealers; or contact Scott Zeeb, Program Coordinator, Michigan Department of Agriculture.
